Collapse De-centering White Culture and Re-centering Diversity Using Picture Books
Good Teaching Conference - Home Edition!
"Presenters will introduce the thematic content of the workshop: Part of anti-racist teaching means we must consciously and intentionally make subtle changes that shift who and what we value as humans. We can use picture books to normalize diversity and bring marginalized people out of the margins by centering those marginalized people, communities, and cultures and decentering the white dominant culture to create a balanced vision of value for all. Presenters will ask participants to make a list of their favorite 10 picture books that they use every year in their classrooms. Participants will make their lists. Presenters will ask participants to focus on the protagonists of the picture books they have selected asking: What percentage of the protagonists are BIPOC? What percentage of the protagonists are white? What percentage of the protagonists are animals whose viewpoint are through a white/dominant culture lens? Participants will discuss their discoveries in small groups or breakout rooms. Participants will come back to the whole group. Presenters will offer demographic data on representation in children’s book publishing of picture books and the authors that write them. They will discuss current discussions in the industry to address marginalized voices and content. Presenter will ask participants to list the stories of BIPOC characters they read to their class. Participants will make their lists and reflect on the following questions: What percentage of the stories are about universal themes i.e. human experiences, friendships, or family relationships? What percentage of the stories are about resistance, oppression, or trauma? What percentage of the stories are about culturally specific experiences such as food, traditions, religion or cultural rituals? Participants will discuss their discoveries in small groups or breakout rooms. Presenters will offer resources and tools for participants to reflect, review, and revise (and/or expand) their reading lists. Presenters will facilitate a Q and A wrap-up so resources from all can be shared among the participants."

Collapse Eroding White Supremacy: A Curricular and Humanist Approach to Bridging the Racial Reality Gap
2022 Equity & Human Rights Conference
Faculty from California State University, Sacramento have taken a novel approach to teaching about equity in undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral level diversity courses. A curriculum that examines this nation’s history from a humanist perspective, i.e. abolitionists and others, has provided an opening by which to address and dismantle the blocks upon which white supremacy have been rooted since the founding of this nation. Last year, CTA Participants who attended our presentation of this curriculum learned about the unique nature of the curriculum and its’ impact on students in higher education. This team has been working with an 8th grade educator to adapt the curriculum for piloting at the 8th grade level. Participants will learn about the original findings and about the newly created curriculum for 8th grade piloting.

Collapse Is it Just Me?- Making Connections for BIPOC Educators

This session focuses on the importance of BIPOC educators finding others they can deeply connect with and turn to for support when they feel like the only one in the room. These connections very well may take place across your district, not just at your site, where you may be the only BIPOC educator on campus. We will discuss finding your tribe, and creating safe AND brave spaces for you to connect and collaborate in order to gain strength through connection and survive the consequences of being "the only one in the room."

Collapse Policies that Ensure Safe and Supportive Schools for LGBTQ+ and All Students
    LGBTQ+ Issues Conference
For over 20 years, Equality California has worked to transform school systems in California to be safer and more supportive of LGBTQ+ and all students through state policy change. Mindful of the long-standing inequities in treatment of LGBTQ+ students and the violence, discrimination, and poor mental health and life outcomes that result from them, Equality California’s Safe and Supportive Schools program ensures that critical protections and best practices that improve students’ lives are being implemented at the district level. By surveying unified school districts using an instrument developed by educational leaders and approved by the California Department of Education, we gather critical information on policy implementation and help superintendents chart a course toward improvement. In this presentation, we will review the Safe and Supportive Schools survey and the laws and best practices that comprise it and discuss how districts can use the survey to create positive, systemic change.

Collapse Restorative Practices: An Alternative to Zero Tolerance Policies
    Issues Conference - Home Edition
What is an educator to do? Zero tolerance policies haven’t worked in resolving behavioral issues with students in the classroom. What alternative to discipline is working to meet the objectives for student learning and creating a community among students and educators? This workshop will expose participants to Restorative Justice as an alternative to zero tolerance practices. Participants will learn the best practices to implement a Restorative Justice practice. Practical tools will be shared enabling participants to institute this approach upon their return to work.
