Using Dungeons & Dragons to Create Engaging Lessons and Increase Curriculum Retention
As teachers, we are always attempting to revolutionize our teaching methods to ensure we are teaching to individual student needs and to make our classrooms fun and engaging. It may be time that we looked at non-traditional or often-overlooked methods for delivering curriculum in a world where innovation is revered and the needs of our students are constantly fluctuating. Table-top role-playing games (TTRPGs) are one way teachers can bring their curriculum to life in a way that is relevant, engaging, entertaining, and immersive. Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) is one TTRPG that could be adapted to fit the classroom teacher’s individual curriculum needs, whether it be building or enhancing skills in literacy, math, social studies, problem solving, social-emotional learning, and/or critical thinking.
