The Learning Center Model: Innovation for Student Success
In 2016, the Bowman Charter School developed a Learning Center model to serve the needs of TK-8th grade students with a wide range of academic and social/emotional ability levels. Over the three years, a team of special educators created an inviting classroom for students to receive the supports they need whether through the IEP process, Tier 2 interventions, or students requiring a safe and quiet place to receive extra academic and social-emotional help. The Learning Center is an academic hub for students and the walls of being different have been replaced with a bright space for students to succeed through confidence in their strengths and ownership in their learning. This workshop will share processes, strategies, and resources our team developed to build on the good work happening throughout the school for students with disabilities to thrive whether through distance learning or in-person education.
